From Pier 4 of the Central Ferry Piers, you can take a ferry to Yung Shue Wan Ferry Pier or Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier on Lamma Island. The two piers are located on the north and east sides of Lamma Island, respectively. Yung Shue Wan is relatively densely populated, and there are various types of restaurants and shops. It is also the most life-like place on the entire island. As for Sok Kwu Wan, although there are some restaurants and shops, compared with the lively Yung Shue Wan, it is full of more tranquility and natural atmosphere.
Among the sections of the Lamma Island Family Walk, most of the visitors will choose to pass the section between Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, which is also the most frequently recommended picnic route on Lamma Island. This time, however, this is not the way to go. In fact, there is a very simple route between Sok Kwu Wan and Mo Tat Wan, and it will pass through playgrounds and beaches. It is definitely a good choice for family outings.
Departing from Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier, you can make some supplies here first. Next to the pier is the Sok Kwu Wan Playground, where there are simple children's play facilities, allowing children to come here to play first. There is also a Sok Kwu Wan Public Toilet next to the playground, which is convenient for simple cleaning.
After that, you can head towards Mo Tat Wan. In fact, when you go to the direction of Mo Tat Wan, only a few visitors will go this way. And this section is also very easy, it feels like a walking route. The scenery along the way is beautiful and the trees are shady, adding a lot of tranquility and quiet atmosphere to the whole journey.
Walking on the Lamma Island Family Walk, first it is a slow upward section, and then through a small forest, the endless sea view is in front of you. From Sok Kwu Wan to Mo Tat Wan, the sea will not be far away along the way. And you can also see a lot of fish steaks on the sea, some are round, some are square, and you can see the beautiful scenery of the southern district of Hong Kong from a distance.
After several slow upward and downward road sections, about half an hour or so, the first fork in the road appeared, which is Mo Tat Wan. Go to the left at the fork, and go downhill along the stone steps to get to Mo Tat Wan Beach. At the back of the beach, there is a restaurant and a shop. Whether you want to taste some delicious food, or want to buy some supplies, there are good choices.
Mo Tat Wan Beach is a small non-government-managed beach, so there are no bathing facilities. However, the water quality here is also good. It is a good choice to come here to play in the sand, take pictures, rest, or watch the sea, and feel the leisure and tranquility here.
If you also want to go out and hike on Lamma Island Family Walk, it is recommended to take the MTR to Hong Kong Station and leave at Exit E1. Afterwards, cross the International Finance Centre (IFC) mall and walk to the Central Ferry Piers. Then take a ferry from Pier 4 to Lamma Island. It takes about 40 minutes to reach Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier. When you arrive at the Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier, follow the Lamma Island Family Walk on the left until you reach Mo Tat Wan.
Next to the Mo Tat Wan Beach, is the Mo Tat Wan Public Pier. Here you can take a ferry back to Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier or Aberdeen Ferry Pier. There are approximately one to two ferries per hour. Before boarding the ferry, it is recommended to ask the crew about the destination of the ferry to avoid going to the wrong place.
