The period of British implemented colonial rule over Hong Kong also coincided with a period of active evangelism by foreign missionaries. At that time, in order to facilitate foreign missionaries to come to Hong Kong for missions, a hillside land in Central, Hong Kong was donated to the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui for permanent use.
"Saint John's Cathedral" was originally designed to be used for worship, but during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the church was used as a Japanese club and many of its original decorations were removed. Until the end of the Second World War, the church reopened and was gradually restored.
The building of the church is cross-shaped, reminiscent of the crucifixion of "Jesus". On the roof of the church, there are clover-shaped or four-leaf clover-shaped glass windows, which are designed to adapt to the subtropical climate of Hong Kong.
Although the place of "Saint John's Cathedral" is not big, its sacred and solemn atmosphere and exquisite and gorgeous decoration can bring out the quaint charm of more than a hundred years. In the hustle and bustle of the city, to find such a quiet and elegant place, it feels like finding an oasis in the desert.
It is also worth mentioning that the church is open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm every day. So after visiting the nearby attractions, you should still have plenty of time to visit here.
If you want to visit this church, it is also very easy. It is recommended to take the MTR to the Central Station and leave at the Exit K. Afterwards, walk through the HSBC Building to Queen's Road Central, and you can see a section of stone steps going uphill in front of you. Follow the signs and go uphill along the stone steps to come to Battery Path. Go a little further and you can see the church.
