Located in the southeast of Cheung Chau, "Kwun Yam Beach" is so named because there is a Kwun Yum Temple dedicated to "Bodhisattva Kwun Yum" on the back of the hillside. This beach is surrounded by mountains and sea. Although the area of the beach is small and the coastline is not long, it has fine sand and clear water. Next to the beach, there are some big trees. Visitors can sit under the shade of these trees and rest while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the bay, which is also very comfortable.
There are also some private water sports centers next to the beach, which provide rental services for water sports equipment. Visitors can rent canoes, stand-up boards, windsurfing or other water surfing equipment. These centers also hold some courses related to windsurfing, attracting many visitors every year to study and enjoy the fun of water sports.
It is also worth mentioning that in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, a Hong Kong athlete won Hong Kong's first Olympic gold medal in windsurfing. The news shocked the whole of Hong Kong, and it is said that this Hong Kong athlete practised windsurfing on this beach in the past.
If you also want to play water sports on this beach, it is recommended to take the MTR to the Hong Kong Station and leave at the Exit E1. Afterwards, cross the International Finance Centre (IFC) mall and walk to the Central Ferry Piers. Then, take the ferry from the Pier No.5 to Cheung Chau Island. It takes about 1 hour to arrive at Cheung Chau Ferry Pier. After arriving at Cheung Chau Ferry Pier, walk along Tung Wan Road on the right to Cheung Chau Beach Road. Then, walk along Cheung Chau Beach Road to Hak Pai Road. After that, walk along the Hak Pai Road and you will see this beach.
